Founded in 1997 in rural Transkei, Kraal Retreat is an initiative to use eco-friendly sustainable business model to encourage positive change and development of surrounding impoverished community. We aim to take our experience of using eco-friendly, self-sustainable tourism to spur local community development to a larger scale, while respecting local cultural heritage and sensitivities. To operationalize this vision, THE KRAAL TODDLERS, a rural non-profit organization, was established. Our mission is to improve health, living and learning conditions in our poverty stricken rural areas through awareness, education and local empowerment. Dedicated primarily to the youngest population of the rural Transkei (under 7 years of age), all our projects engage local communities to accomplish our joint objectives of: Health through institution of nutrition programs, incorporation of deworming in pre-school health care plans; building community and school-based playgrounds; Empowerment through donation programs that secure adequate clothes, supplies and funds for children to attend school; organization of developing extracurricular activities for children (and elders) including arts, crafts, sports; initiation and support of sustainable farming projects and brokerage of inter-community trade and initiatives; improvement of teachers’ and elders’ awareness to fight child abuse and rape syndrome and HIV/AIDS; and, Sustainability through organization of school-based gardening projects; reintegration of traditional crafts and cultural heritage into rural communities; and education of local communities on eco-tourism and ecological self-sustainable way of life. The Kraal Toddlers is always looking for new ideas and partners to make our vision become reality. Whether you are interested in helping us fundraise, build schools or empower our communities through creative arts, we are happy to discuss opportunities for partnership.
